Sushi as Education: Culinary Joy, Mastery, and Learning

Before Christmas, Ocean Stories was pleased to welcome 6th grade students from Honningsvåg School for a lesson in Food and Health. The students made sushi with our own salmon and experienced how ingredients from the sea can become healthy, exciting, and tasty food.

For many students, this was their first encounter with both sushi and raw fish. Nevertheless, the students approached the task with great curiosity and enthusiasm. There was rolling, tasting, laughter, and numerous rewarding experiences. The outcome? Satisfied bellyfuls and proud students.

Food and Health in Practice

Making sushi offers a unique opportunity to work practically with several of the learning objectives in food and health, including:

  • preparing safe and simple food from scratch

  • getting to know raw ingredients and their origins

  • understanding the connection between diet, health, and sustainability

  • developing cooperation, hygiene, and basic kitchen skills

Through hands-on teaching, students gain not only knowledge but also experience. They learn where food comes from, how it is handled, and how high-quality ingredients can be used creatively.

Learning about the coast and the sea

At Ocean Stories, we aim to share knowledge about life along the coast, and food is a natural part of that story. By incorporating local farmed salmon into our lessons, we connect theory to real-world scenarios and give students an understanding of aquaculture, food production, and local resources.

We find it incredibly inspiring to welcome school groups and look forward to more visits in the future. Contributing to learning, food enjoyment, and curiosity about the sea is an important part of our mission.
