Taste the herring fillets and soak them in water or milk for a couple of hours if they are too salty.
Cut the fillets into pieces.
Grate the apple and mix it together with the sour cream, mustard, sugar, and vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Fold the herring pieces into the sauce.
Pour the mixture into a jar or container, and put on a lid.
The herring can be served the same day it’s prepared.
The herring will keep in the refrigerator for about 1 week.
