  • Cut the herring fillets into pieces and slice the onions thinly.
  • Heat the oil in a saucepan and let it warm up.
  • Stir in tomato paste and bring to a boil.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat, add sugar, and stir until it melts.
  • Let cool, then stir in water and vinegar, and season with pepper.
  • Layer the herring, onions, and dill in a jar or container.
  • Pour over the tomato sauce and cover with a lid.
  • The herring should marinate for a day in the refrigerator before serving.
  • The herring keeps in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks.
